CECS6020, Week 12

Our concept, as presented in our design document, was well received by our peers. Most liked the idea of a course for educators to explore mobile learning. Most of the criticism was in regards to our actual design document, which was rough and somewhat disjointed. We promptly worked to resolve the issues and create a more uniform document. Our team decided to use Schoology to prototype our course. This was because we felt that the mobile application, app, used to access course content on Schoology was well designed and streamlined: a perfect tool to not only deliver our instruction but for learners to use in planning their instruction intended for mobile learners. Personally, I thought we could have the learners develop a framework for a mobile application based on content of their choosing. Instead, we decided to focus our instruction around four different areas which might best utilize mobile instruction: K-12, higher ed, corporate, and non-profit.

In the development of the prototype I am responsible for creating the instructional content around the introductory section and K-12. This is fitting, given my experience in these areas.

Because the field of mobile learning is still being researched, though widely reported on, finding relevant literature is proving difficult.

I decided to enter my comments here instead of on the PDF. I like your idea and you have a great topic. I think as you develop this project, the depth will come in your learning expectations and learning activities and some of these points will become clearer as to the specifics. I would like to see the use of sources and more literature in the problem and topic sections of your design document. Also, I think that some type of group project (more than just peer review) would be a good addition because you are in an LMS/online and it would allow for more student/student interaction. Great start.

I wish we had a whole lot more topics like this our very curriculum - it is the future and it needs to be whole heartedly embraced. Posting my comments here instead of the PDF file. A Word doc would have been nice to track changes.

1. Comments on this statement "In particular, this course will provide strategies for using mobile devices and “apps” in a constructivist manner to place the student at the center of the learning experience, thereby improving the quality of the education, along with the
manner in which information is recalled and retained." This is such an empowering statement that ties the theory "constructivist" to the true learning process. A great anchor statement for the overall course.
2. Comments on this statement 'This was to satisfy a need in keeping students current in the
newest developments or trends in both education but also learning technologies." There is a very important need to expose people to go against the status quo and to expand their horizons. Personal note - I love Apple products, but I feel that I am not keeping current with other technologies. I was watching a person the other day using an Android phone and he was drawing a wiggly line throughout the keyboard. I asked him what he was doing and he taught me that by drawing a line through different letters it was an easy way to type instead of hitting each key with his fat fingers. Expand technical knowledge on a regular basis is very much needed.
3. Based on the following - I want to take the course! "Through online coursework, learners will demonstrate the knowledge and skills to effectively design applications that successfully deliver instruction via mobile electronic devices and apply that knowledge to develop an educational application.
4. Application Evaluation Rubric - I clicked the link and it worked - nice spreadsheet!
Cool way of cleanly embedding.

It is clearly a working document and I can see why you wanted us to see this in the PDF. I think your objectives might change as you continue working. Right now they seem to me to be hardware heavy and software light, but the rest of your document looks the opposite. Also, you may want to choose different terminology in one spot of your assessment section. I do not think the term "correct version" is something used in constructivist instruction like this. This sounds like an interesting topic; hope y'all have fun with it!

I'm interested to see where this goes Jared, Mike, and Josh. As you've noted, you have the start of some good ideas here, but they're still rough. I think the biggest task ahead of you is to sort out exactly who your audience is and what you want them to achieve so that you can narrow in on your design.

At this point, I think the objectives and activities speak to a great course, but maybe a bit too technical for most undergraduate education majors. On the flip side, the Topic describes a really useful course that would be useful for education majors in that it would help them learn to integrate mobile devices.

I've included additional comments in the attached Word document.

Looking forward to seeing how this comes together!

I love the topic for your class. This is something I've been wanting to learn. My comments are in the attached PDF.
